News (June 25, 2010)

Michel & Denyse.

Welcome

It is with great pleasure that we will accompany you in the wonderful world of the daylilies.

Our garden is located in Carignan in Montérégie (Québec, Canada) within Zone 5. Our land area is 70,000 sq ft including 40,000 sq ft of wood. The garden itself occupies 25,000 sq ft but is expanding each year.

The garden is made of English style flower beds mainly made of Daylilies, lilies, iris, peony, astibles, cimifugas, shrubs, medicinal plants and fine herbs. We also have a “nursery” and numerous places for our daylilies hybridizations.

A little bit of history

Our interest for daylilies began in 1990. However since 1998, it has become a passion. We have more than 500 registered cultivars stemming from the best hybridizers. All of our cultivars were chosen on the basis of their exceptional genetics.

Since 1996, we have a hybridization program to improve the hardiness of the cultivars which are, for the most part, developed in Florida. We have registered five daylilies that are performing very well under our climate. Our goal is quality before quantity. We are expecting to register three daylilies in 2011.

We have more than 1,000 sowings in observation which are left alone without any winter protection to see their potential under our climate. Of these 1,000 sowings, we will keep about 1% (10) that we will evaluate over a three years period. After these three years of “probation” we will register those who meet our criterions, which are: hardiness, number of buttons per butt and other qualitative criterions (color, form, size, etc.). From sowing to saleable, it will take about seven years.

In 2006, we have acquired a 20’x12’x8’ greenhouse to produce our flowers and fine herbs. It enabled me to experiment with many so called “exotic” flower crops and other oddities. I also keep a few daylilies to hybridize in the winter… it helps me to pass the time.
